Editorial Reviews:

Parents often confuse love with overindulgence, afraid to subject their children to a moment of frustration or deprive them of anything they might desire. But in order to become resilient and responsible adults, children must learn that they can't always get their way.

Since motherhood is now her most important role, beloved actress Marilu Henner has often turned to Dr. Ruth Velikovsky Sharon, a highly respected psychoanalyst, for advice on raising her own children. This practical, accessible guidebook that they've compiled together shows parents how to:

  • Establish parent-child contracts and effective methods of discipline
  • Handle temper tantrums, bedtime issues, sibling rivalry, lying, and much more
  • Help their children tolerate frustration and become comfortable with difficult feelings

Filled with dozens of real-life questions, practical advice, and humorous anecdotes, I Refuse to Raise a Brat is a witty and useful resource to help parents raise secure and self-reliant children.

Summary: I REFUSE TO READ THE REST OF THIS BOOK
Comment: I get the gist of what the authors were trying to convey but the advice became so discombobulated and ridiculous that they missed the target. Just because Marilu is a celebrity who has children does not qualify her to write this type of literature. She tries to gain validity by teaming with a professional who, unfortunately, seems unqualified as well. Their views also seem very "out-of-touch" and anti-nurturing. For example: If your child is sick one day, they suggest that you don't stay home with him. You should have your housekeeper stay with him instead.

This book mostly out-raged me. On what merits was it even published? Honestly, I couldn't even read the last chapters because it was so poor. Save yourself some time and do your kids a favor and don't read this book.

Summary: Brings Awareness to Overindulgence
Comment: I initially read this book when I first discovered I was pregant with my daughter (who is now eight). I recently skimmed through it again while going through an old box of books to give (or not to give) away. I'm glad I read it because it brought a lot of important parenting issues to my attention - one being narcissism. And although I did not agree with every piece of parenting advice she gives, I think that the general concept of the book is fantastic. I think she touches on a lot of important topics in a world of overindulgence. I think that some of the reviews that have been written are down right mean and narrow-minded. Someone else's views on parenting is not a personal offense if I don't agree with it. This book offeres a lot of excellent insight. We all usually do the best we can as parents. I think it's worth it to read any parenting book. You never know what kind of wisdom you'll gain. Take what you can from it and disregard the rest.

Summary: Annoying
Comment: This book is so irritating and annoying. Marilu Henner comes across as bitter, and not enjoying her children very much at all. She is so concerned about being strict with rules that she seems to miss the joys of parenting.

I wonder if she has changed her mind about any of her statements now that her children are older.

Summary: Refreshing & Honest Advice often hurts
Comment: I am also not surprised by all the negative reviews. I picked this book up when my daughter was 2 and I was having a really difficult time raising her. If you can read this book without dissecting every little piece of it I think you will find some very good, easy-to-follow advice. The book also breaks up into sections where it shows different and sometimes difficult situations which every parent encounters with their child. Each way it shows you a way to resolve these conflicts-- it is so useful. Reading how to do something is useful-but applying it to everyday situations is gold. Parents have a right to pick and choose which conflicts they are going to relate to the book and which solutions to incorporate in their own life. I did this with my own daughter, and although hard at times (which always is-rearing a child especially at this age) I get parents who tell me all the time how well behaved and happy my daughter is. We are very close too and she knows she is very loved. I agree that rules are lacking in society and parents are to blame for letting their kids be the ones in control and dictate their parents. Henner gives us some simple tools that we, as parents, can choose to use. She gets 2 thumbs up from me as a satisfied parent. By the way, I was 23 when I read this book (now 30) and didn't even know who Henner was. Good old fashioned parenting is still IN as far as I'm concerned.

Summary: Not very good advice
Comment: ...in fact, some of these things are borderline abusive.

Psychology studies have shown (*exhaustively*) that the strict-parent model doesn't work. Others, such as James Dobson, call this the punishing father model. They result in children who can't tell parents the truth, who learn to be manipulative, and in fact grow up to be abusive (emotionally or physically).

Much better books are: Reviving Ophelia (a classic), anything by Alice Miller (one of the best post-Freudian psychologists alive today), and anything by Anne Wilson Schaeff.
