Editorial Reviews:

If you're like most people, 70 percent of what's in your kitchen right now is unhealthy and has to go. Now the good news ...

This book will show you that there are healthy and tasty alternatives to everything in your refrigerator and pantry, and the transition is easier than you think.

When it comes to food, most of us go through a constant tug–of–war between the foods we love and the foods we feel we should be eating. But what if we didn't have to give up our favourite foods? What if we could take recipes from our childhood or our favourite cookbooks and find healthier ways to enjoy them?

Marilu Henner's Healthy Life Kitchen shows you a new way, a better way, to create a "health factory" in your home. Out go the red meat, dairy, and refined sugar products, and in come the freshest fruits, vegetables, grains, soy, seafood, poultry, and seasonings imaginable–and, in a few easy steps, you've created a Healthy Life you!

After inspiring legions of readers with Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover and The 30–Day Total Health Makeover, Marilu presents the first cookbook in her bestselling series.

Summary: My family loves these recipes!
Comment: My family had to avoid dairy for the sake of my son's allergy and this was one of the cookbooks I picked up. I don't necessarily agree with all of Marilu's nutritional suggestions, but my family have LOVED every recipe I've made from this cookbook, and I've made more than a third of the recipes.

Family favorites include the sesame-crusted salmon, wild rice pancakes, rich man's stew, curried coconut chowder, potato-leek soup, wild mushroom soup, thai coleslaw, black bean and shrimp lettuce wraps, brussels sprouts with glazed onions (the only way I can tolerate brussels sprouts), chili over polenta, butternut squash pasta, and hunter's tofu.

I've had to modify ingredient amounts on a couple recipes, presumably because of errors, but almost all are great as written. The recommended soy cheeses contained the milk protein casein; they weren't dairy-free enough for my son, though they would suit someone who is lactose intolerant rather than allergic to casein.

Wonderful cookbook for those who follow Marilu's dietary guidelines, for vegetarians (particularly if they have family members who enjoy fish/seafood occasionally), for those transitioning to a more vegetarian diet, and for people avoiding dairy. Or for people who enjoy this type of recipe, like my family!

Summary: Ah, mainstream "health" advice...
Comment: I'm a whole (read: REAL) foods junkie, and my well-meaning boyfriend's mother gave me this book, since she knows I'm into health food, healthy cleaning and green living. I'm certainly not an expert myself, but having read the interpretations of various certified nutritionists, I think I have a pretty good idea of what to eat and what NOT to eat. Well, Marilu wants you to avoid dairy. Um, that's fine, since your average milk at your average convienence store is pasteurized crud produced by unhappy, bovine-growth-hormone-fed feedlot cows, with an omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio that's completely out of whack, and casein allergy (even to organic raw millk) is on the rise these days, as is lactose intolerance in adults. Problem is, her version of avoiding dairy and red meat means eating all-soy, everyday! And the vast majority of soy products your average consumer is going to buy are going to be non-organic, hella-processed (what the heck IS soy lechtin, anyway?) and loaded with hydrogenated oils - something she advises you against consuming! Not to mention that to my tastes those "healthy" soy products are even more disgusting than store bought milk (and I'm not alone; another reviewer noted the same thing, as has pratically anyone I've known who doesn't eat soy for ethical or "health" reasons).

Bottom line: If you want mainstream "health" advice, go to Marilu or another peddler of the "summation of studies" health-foods fad approach to dieting (which I'm sure is going to change again in another ten years, as it always does - and by the way, this was published in 2000, so expect it to be even more outdated with "contrasting studies" within two years). If you want a real improvement in your health, eat real foods, not 30+ ingredient soy "meat". Don't avoid meat, dairy and eggs...but only consume them when they're organic, and grass-fed/free-range, and preferably when you know your farmer (buy meat from a local farm you can visit, or from your farmer's market if you're in the city). The best way to avoid additives is to not eat processed food period; and yes, Marilu, that includes the soy "saviors" you've listed. And if you do have a legitimate reason to avoid dairy (or eggs, or meat), such as an allergy or an ethical objection, don't rely on a one-product substitution for your abstinence of choice. It's common sense that that's not a recipe for a healthy life.

Comment: Not only will you love the recipes in this book, you will use it again and again as a guidebook and manual to healthy cooking/living. It explains the components of a healthy diet according to her plan, and gives many food ideas for healthier eating and substituting.

It contains great recipes for every category of food.
