Nine years and thirteen printings later, Unplug the Christmas Machine is still the undisputed guide to creating a joyful, stress-free holiday season. Revised and filled with new material, this book will enjoy even greater popularity in the years to come. In the pages of Unplug the Christmas Machine, Jo Robinson and jean Coppock Staeheli answer the questions they have heard most often in their many years of talking with people about Christmas, such as: "How can I reduce the stress of preparing for Christmas?" "How can I make our celebration more spiritual and less materialistic?" "How can I get my husband to be more enthusiastic about Christmas?" "How can I get my wife to relax and enjoy the celebration?" and "How can I help my children see that Christmas is more than just presents?" Readers will turn to this book for inspiration and practical advice year after year. Sixteen years after it first appeared, this perennial favorite is still the book that thousands turn to for sound, no-nonsense advice on how to combat Christmas commercialism and create a joyful, stress-free holiday season. The authors answer all the most commonly asked questions, from "How can I reduce the stress of preparing for Christmas?" to "How can I teach my children that Christmas means mote than just presents?" and many more.

Customer Rating: Summary: Save your sanity during the holidays! Comment: I love this book. It has simple, helpful exercises that allow you to discover what the holidays mean to you and what you would like to keep and what you would like to toss this holiday season. I love the exercise that allows you to create your fantasy holiday. This is the best book I have ever read about creating a holiday that has meaning, joy and celebration - simply. Buy this book first before you buy any holiday gifts!
Customer Rating: Summary: What I think... Comment: I read this years ago, lent it out and never got it back. I repurchased a copy from Amazon. It's a little outdated but some of the thoughts never go out of style, such as SIMPLIFYING!
Customer Rating: Summary: Want to de-stress from the holiday season? Comment: This book is perfect for those who need to de-stress from the manical demands of the holiday season. I read it in a couple of days ... it is filled with questions and answers, a lot of which I already knew the answers to. It is still helpful in forming reasons on why my husband and I decided to de-stress from the holiday season and how we can make it memorable for our young sons.
If you are looking for a way to transform your personal Christmas or looking for answers that you wish you could find in the holiday season, this book is a great place to start. In today's tough economic times, this book offers plenty of insights. This book was published in 1993 and while some of it is dated, a lot of it is still relevant today. There are suggestions on how to make Christmas memorable for every individual taste. It offers tips on how to share ideas to make extended family's Christmases together easier and cheaper. It also takes the pressure off of one to create the perfect Christmas and how to tell the kids that Santa is only bringing one or two gifts instead of a lot.
I really enjoyed this book and am glad that I read it. This is a book I wish I had the money to buy for 35 relatives and friends ... to remind them that Christmas does not need to be this big commerical affair. It can be a time of quiet reflections with memorable times, not fancy gifts that people forget about within minutes. This is a necessary reading for all people during this stressful season ... and perhaps, it doesn't need to be so stressful after all!

Customer Rating: Summary: dated but worth it! Comment: This book is a little dated, but the general theme is good. The part I liked the best was surveys that helped me evaluate my values associated with Christmas and then line them up with where my time generally goes during the holidays. I read this book as part of a class which was based on it. It was good to hear others ideas too. This book made a huge difference for me and ultimately for my family. We're having a lower stress, higher joy kind of Christmas.
Customer Rating: Summary: Unplug the Christmas Machine Comment: Excellent - I plan to re-read it again before Christmas! Gets you centered and away from the frenzy of Christmas.
