Summary: Best meditation book by far
Comment: I have hundreds of books and if I could only keep one, this would be it. I bought many meditation books prior to this one and haven't felt the need to look further since. It is both relaxing and refreshing to read and I do so at least twice a year. I've given it as a gift to important people in my life and they value it as much as I do.

Summary: Meditation Practices for People Who Think It's Difficult or Weird
Comment: I'm a conservative who happens to practice yoga and meditation. Yoga for over 10 years; meditation for about 7. They are practices, so I like to read some new material now and then because it's good to learn more about the things you do. Could be cooking or decorating, too, right?

I started as a closet meditator, because it was difficult for folks to deal with the stereotype. I've come to enjoy and look forward to my meditation practice more and more over time. I'm sleeping the best I ever have thanks to meditation practice. Still, occasionally one feels the need to seek out the new and different, so I read a lot about meditation too.

The book is part discussion, part exercises. The discussion material tells the reader flat out that you don't have to play by anyone's rules to meditate. The tone is conversational. It's almost like having a teacher at my side. The exercises cover a wide range of techniques - there's a lot of creativity, and something for everybody. From breathing to mantra to pause-at-the-door, numerous tips for getting yourself into a meditative state are presented. My star off 5 is because no one is going to find all these useful. Some are filler.

If you haven't tried meditation, even if you don't plan to meditate, it wouldn't hurt to read this book because you can get an idea of why people meditate. Don't take my word for it, take Roche's. Meditation doesn't have to be weird, scary, or hard to do. This is a good book for getting started. This is also worthy material for the seasoned meditator, even if you don't always agree with the author.

Summary: A CLEAR, POWERFUL BOOK THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Comment: Lorin Roche is a master, not the kind you'd imagine meeting on the top of a mountain, but the kind you would hope to meet on the earth--a wise friend who has been there and back, and can explain the path of meditation to you. He takes what is a complex subject, and presents it in a way that is easy to understand, easier to practice and yet powerfully useful. He is funny and sincere, profound and light-hearted all at the same time. This book is essential for anyone who doesn't want to formally study with a meditation teacher, but knows he or she needs to meditate..or at least find out why so many people do. I highly recommend it as a meditator myself for over 36 years.

Summary: The BEST book on meditation period.
Comment: I learned more about meditation from the introduction of this book than I did in the dozens of books I previously read. Mr. Roche debunks all of the myths that have built up around meditation. He teaches about all of the things you do now that cause you experience meditative awareness; listening to music that you love, drifting slowly awake for a few moments before opening your eyes, makeing love or being so in love that your heart seems to turn to light. Achieving moments like these are the goal of meditation and Mr. Roche tells you how to do it easily.
I've been trying to meditate for over twenty years. I had given up and convinced myself that I was one of those people who couldn't do it because I could never quiet my thoughts. I'm meditating every day now and I love it. I'm not trying to control or stop my thoughts anymore. I don't want to try and tell more because I'd just be paraphrasing the book and it's too good a book for that. I'd be doing it a disservice.
Believe me this is a whole new take on meditation, it works and it is easy.
