Customer Rating: Summary: I really felt "The Wave" Comment: My comments focus on the Lunar disc. I've not yet attempted the Solar disk** because of the focus on arm balances, but will tackle it on a strong day with modifications. As a general note, this CD set experienced birthing pains, with the Lunar disc contained a flaw. To their credit, Sounds True and Shiva & Co. demonstrated excellent customer service in replacing all Lunar discs with the corrected version in a timely manner. I am still mildly annoyed that the solar disk is blue, and the lunar disc is orange, but that's my problem to overcome. So be forewarned, if you are considering purchasing this, make sure Amazon sends you a corrected set.
It comes with a booklet explaining Shiva's intentions to bring the ocean to our practice, and the importance of fluidity to our lives and bodies. There are brief, adequate printed instructions and photos of her demonstrating asana in the sand, at times with the surf running over her. Music for Lunar is hypnotic with watery tones - tinkling, raindrops, ocean surf; for Solar it is a bit stronger, with light background chants at times, perhaps to help you "lighten" in the pose, and some unobtrusive percussion in the tough parts. Shiva's instruction is clearly in the foreground throughout.
During Lunar Wave Progressions, observant yogis will experience a true ocean wave - forward flowing (lunging, pigeon), ebbing (half splits, child's pose), and cresting (Anahatanasana, up dog or cobra).
Breakdown, 60 minutes total:
1 - Prana Wave warmup, arms sweeping up and down with the breath, progressing to spinal wave, to mat on all fours for cat's breath. Ohms chanted on exhale.
2 - Lunar Wave I, hip opening - pulsing lunges, Ardha Hanumanasa (half splits), Anahatanasana, Sphinx or Cobra with neck flow, pigeon wave; repeat opposite.
3 - Lunar Wave II/Wave 1 - hip opening and twisting - from half split wave flow forward into lunge, to pigeon, gracefully transitioning to seated twist then back to pigeon same side, Anahatanasana and its twisting version, cobra wave at top of the sequence; repeat opposite.
3 - Lunar Wave II/Wave 2 - Repeat half splits/lunge/pigeon wave with Ardha Danurasana (kneeling half bow) and full Dhanurasana (bow) culminating the wave.
4 - Forward Bend Wave I - Pigeon counterpose which is actually the final stretch into fully extended pigeon to "marinate."
5 - Forward Bend Wave II - featuring pulsing into forward bending Baddhakonasana then Upavista Konasana, wide angle pose.
6 - Option to practice Nadi Sodhana as music gives way to ocean surf.
7 - Intro to Shavasana, crashing ocean waves.
8 - Shavasana Wave, option to remain in relaxation while meditating to a kirtan-styled, simple and repetitive song about the ocean waves. It is unusual and I suspect some might find it hokey; I enjoyed it but issue an earworm warning!
**Notes on Solar (untried) - Arm balance flow disc starts out with a Yoga Mala Wave (Sun Salutations) and progresses to waves featuring Crow, Galavasana, Vismamitrasana (the side angle pose where you hold the top leg over your head!) and backbends such as camel and wheel. It looks like a vigorous practice for athletic yogis. Shiva speaks stronger than her hypnotic Lunar coaching.
The instruction on both discs is measured and accurate, delivered with a calm voice. Those who have found Shiva to be a little "out there" recently might wish to consider this offering, which somehow manages to be grounded and meditative at the same time. Cues such as "pour yourself over your right leg," "draw your heart towards the earth," and "back leg a bow with arrow extending through your heart" seemed appropriate and not overly flowery. Helpful reminders as to breath patterns, alignment, and pointers for modifications are given frequently.
Customer Rating: Summary: Shiva Does it Again! Comment: (I am updating this review from 4/22. As of right now there is a track error on this double CD set. The Yoga Mala on Disc I is reapeated by mistake on Disc II on Track 2 which is supposed to be a hip opening flow. The CD has to be remastered and then rereleased. Just wanted to let people know about this as you may want to wait to get your copy until the problem is resolved. Sounds True is the company that put out the CD. They can be contacted at 800-333-9185 for more information about a rerelease.)
Finally! A Shiva Rea Fluid Yoga practice for my iTunes! Over two hours of programmable practice, similar in structure to the Yoga Shakti and Fluid Power matricies; meaning you can do a preset flow or create your own flow based on your needs and how much time you have.
I did my first practice from these CDs this morning. I did the entire solar flow and about half of the lunar flow. I was very challenged and feel very worked out in the afterwards. (And I have been doing Shiva yoga or Shiva style yoga for going on 4 years now). I can see how someone who is new to Shiva Rea yoga might have to look at the photos in the 33 pg CD booklet while doing the practice the first few times to be sure to be doing the asanas correctly. She does use the Sanskrit names for poses as well as the English names and to me her instruction is clear and concise.
The solar practice focuses very heavily on backbends and arm balances. On Yoga Shakti and Fluid Power, I tend to focus more on hip opening and less on back bends and arm balances, so this is less experienced ground for me, especially in the realm of backbends which I have to be very careful with. Her backbend instruction is very concise and I felt relatively safe doing it. The arm balance wave flow is a kicker: Bakasana in wave 2, Galavasana prep and Galavasana in wave 3 and Parsva Bakasana in wave 4 was a LOT of arm balance and core strengthening work!
I really like the way she ties the Fluid Power concepts of moving in waves to the more traditional Yoga Shakti style by constantly offering the practitioner the option of doing the wave-like movements of Fluid Power or "marinating in the pose" in the more traditional way.
There is no specific abdominal sequence, but after all that arm balancing work, I felt fully worked out in the abdominal area.
I found the Shavasana to be a little odd: a folky type song with lyrics seemed to keep me from really going down into my restorative place, but different strokes for different folks. It doesn't take anything away from my five star review.
I can't wait to do the parts of the Lunar Wave Progressions that I didn't do today. THANK YOU, Shiva for another beautiful, heart opening, joy inspiring and challenging teaching.
