It is love at first sight for David Graham and his new bride, Elizabeth. Everything is perfect, except for the ongoing difficulty with their respective pets. David's cat and Elizabeth's labrador do not see eye to eye. However, by the time their daughter, Gabrielle, comes along, everything has fallen nicely into place. Both parents and pets are thrilled at the new arrival. Life is wonderful!
Five years later the family is informed that young Gabi has leukemia. Her parents are devastated. While being treated for her illness, Gabi, who has lost her hair and become quite frail, decides that she wants a puppy of her own. Her insistence becomes a reality when the family picks out a basset hound puppy, which she names Pierre. Within a year it is discovered that Pierre also has a life threatening disease, and the Grahams find themselves fighting for both lives with frequent dispensings of pills and visits to doctors.
The bond between Pierre and Gabi is strong. In the evenings at sunset they can be found looking out at the brightly colored sky, sitting side by side. And later, as their health improves, they are treated to holiday parties as well as family vacations. On one such trip, there is an attempted robbery of their parked vehicle, at which time both Pierre and Dolly the Labrador take matters into their own teeth!
"Gabi and Pierre La'Pu" is written for children ages five to twelve. It is a lesson in perseverance, empathy, compassion, and love.
