Summary: Good short workouts, could have been organized better
Comment: These are good short workouts, for when you are pressed for time, or they can also be used as warm-ups for other workouts.

The first workout is by far the best, but one negative is that the program intro (with the workout descriptions and where the instructors are introduced) is attached to this instead of being separate--it adds over a minute of downtime, or you could use this time as additional warm-up.

Also, since each exercise is demonstrated during the workout, there is more downtime than there should be (and this is true of all the workouts, which, when you only have 10 minutes, is an issue). As you become more familiar with the workout, you can throw in a few extra reps. Missing are some triceps exercises, but you could do them while executing some of the squats instead of just holding the weights at your sides. You only have 10 minutes, may as well engage as many muscles as you can.

The second workout is kind of a slow-motion kickboxing workout--think Super Slow or Power of 10, as far as how long it takes to execute some of the movements. Good for working on your balance. You might wish to add some light weights (the type used for walking that you can safely wrap around your palm) to make this one more difficult.

The third workout has an aerobics component combined with some plies, planks and pushups. To ramp this one up, move your arms instead of keeping them on your hips.

If you do all three workouts at one time, this will give you a short but decent total body workout, especially if you pay attention to form and concentrate on engaging your muscles.

Summary: A good start for the unfit...
Comment: I was a bit intimidated by fitness videos when I first started, but I found that this one put me more at ease. The women work well together, and it's more like working out with your friends than with an instructor. The moves are challenging, but basic enough for beginners that you don't have to feel like you're flailing around aimlessly. I still use it when I want a lighter or shorter workout.

Summary: Effective and Finely Tuned Exercises
Comment: Quick Fix is a classic 30-minute Toning Routine divided up into three 10-minute sections. The first routine focuses on upper body, although there are reverse lunges and you use weights to increase the challenging aspects.

This initial introduction warms the body and seems to focus on the arms. You are holding weights for most of the time, so this may be of concern if you use more than a 3lb set of weights. I tried a 5lb set, but returned to using 3lbs because it was hurting my wrists. The second segment brings creativity to a unique kick boxing routine that incorporates boxing moves into a highly enjoyable workout. Plenty of stretches are included throughout the routine and in what seems like no time at all you are at the third routine.

Lunges, jumping jacks, push-ups and plank are all included. This focuses on lower and upper body and continues the calorie burning moves. If you complete all three routines you should be guaranteed of a full-body sweat or at least a misting.

Summary: Decent (but flawed) workout.
Comment: Sometimes I don't feel like working out at all, but then I look at my gut and realize I need to do *something* physical. That's when I search for a relatively short DVD workout, say, 30 minutes or so. "Quick Fix - Total Toning" fits that bill, at least time wise. The 30-minute total length is enough to soothe my conscience, and the Quick Fix format of self-contained 10-minute sessions is cool because it's easier to complete a full workout in shorter stages (or do a smaller workout if pressed for time). Unfortunately, the quality of the workouts and instructors on this DVD are uneven. That's a shame, since some tweaking and polish would have made this a 5-star exercise DVD instead of a 3-star one.

A useful feature of the Quick Fix format is the countdown timer in each ten-minute section. It's about the size (and in the same place) of those channel logos in the lower right corner of cable or satellite TV stations. It looks kind of like this: :QF10. The numeral counts down by minutes. It goes to :QF9 when nine minutes are left, and so on until the end of the segment. A little minute hand circumnavigates the Q as well. I liked the timer, since it indicates both progress and time to completion.

Each of the three women leads one of the 10-minute sections, and they act as assistants when not instructing. As a group they do a good job of demonstrating the exercises. But throughout the entire workout they have an annoying mutual admiration thing going on. Sometimes two, or even all three, would chime in at the same time with flattering statements that were more distracting than edifying. As for the workouts, they will tone your muscles and make you sweat. However, I was disappointed with the uneven quality of both the exercises and the instructors.

Minna Lessig sets the bar high with a good start. She calls well, and her workout consists of old aerobics strength training standards (squats, backward lunges, hand weight exercises, etc.). I can see why she has her own series of video workouts. However, the other two instructors failed to match her level of expertise. Some of the exercises in the middle kickboxing workout, such as the slow front kicks, are good for building strength and balance. But a couple of the upper body routines, like punching forward and backward simultaneously, seem a bit hokey compared to other examples from the genre. In addition, the leader's calling skills needed sharpening. The third and last workout focuses on using body weight for building strength, and falls somewhere between the other two in quality. It's made up of a combination of weightless aerobics strength exercises (squats, lunges, etc.) and Pilates-style moves (holding plank position, knee pushups, etc.). The leader does a serviceable job, but her transitions could have been better.

The overall "Quick Fix - Total Toning" routine isn't bad, but it isn't great either. It will allow you to get a decent 30-minute (or less) muscle-toning workout. The first section is best, and the last gets the job done. But the weak middle section detracts from the whole, and the forced banter was intrusive. I like the Quick Fix format, and I'm hoping that other DVDs in the series will be more impressive.

Summary: Surprisingly Good!
Comment: I was initially turned off by the cover of this DVD..... Just the expression "Quick Fix" always seems like a gimmick to me. But because of the cheap price and some reviews I had read, I finally decided to give it a try. It is actually a great DVD - the instructors are all great (espeically Minna!) and the moves are somewhat challenging but easy to follow. Each of the three 10 minute segments offers something a little bit different. I like that it combines toning w/ some moves that raise your heart rate. While it was not an extremely challenging workout, I felt the burn and was sweating by the end of it. I wish it had at least one more segment though. Overall, a great work out at a great price.
