Summary: Reasons For Repitition
Comment: I guess that this book enabled me to realise that I had a booze problem better than reading books about Keith Moon but, and it is a big but, it sure starts to get repetitive. The book kinda drags on after page 200 and, for the first time after such an illuminating first hundred pages, and a slightly drifty second hundred, the book snuffs itself out really. Less also about God for all of our sakes! Alcohol is easy to kick if you have the internal power. I got about as much about God ('Him', 'Christ', 'Jesus', 'The Lord') as I think I could stomach. In fact, it nearly drove me to the nearest bar for a pint or ten. No disrespect, but the AA/God vibe is not mine and not a lot of others' too. The first hint of religion to many alcoholics that want to quit is one that nearly drives them away from their desire- whether it frightens them or simply repels them is entirely individualistic rational action. Keep it simple, tell the stories, get the message across, go to bed and wake up a new man or woman as a result. Quit the booze yeah, take up God- well that's up to you intirely, but it's not for me.

Summary: This book changed my life
Comment: When I read The Courage to Change the first time (1987, the original edition) it changed my life because it explained alcoholism in a concrete way that was easy to understand. The stories from alcoholic (and some nonalcoholic) celebrities go a long way toward illustrating the damage this disease causes while showing that you don't have to be the proverbial falling-down drunk or daily drinker to be an alcoholic. The stories also, by the way, are entertaining and show the humanity of some of the household names who tell them. Wholey mixes up the rhythm of this book enough that you don't get bored. Something here for everyone--I've personally bought literally more than 12 copies to give away. I recommend it highly. Thanks, Dennis Wholey!
