Summary: Another food fad diet
Comment: If you believe you can solve your alcohol problem by changing your diet and taking food supplements, this book will appeal to you strongly. On the other hand, if you believe that, you'll probably believe anything.

Summary: Expensive treatment
Comment: Oh, what a dissapointment. After reading this book half-way through and getting all excited about starting this nutritional programme, I finally chequed out the website.... $450 for the supplements needed for six weeks of treatment!
One of the things that make me drink more than is good for me, is my worry about money matters. Well, at the moment it's cheaper for me to keep drinking to block out the depression and worry, than to buy all these pills, that may or may not make a difference. I wish I had known that before thinking there may be a way out of this downward spiral of drinking and then worrying about drinking....
Good luck to you if you deceide to try this and can afford it.

Summary: AA will not put vital nutrients back into your body
Comment: It was one of those things that were meant to be. I found this book in a health food shop while I was looking to buy some liver detoxifying herbs and supplements for my brother, who had finally decided to put and end to his seven years long heavy (I mean, heavy) drinking. AA was never an option for him, so this book was a godsent. I read it before giving it to him so I could have an understanding of the whole issue. I never knew that alcohol leaves the same "pattern" in the brain as heroin!!

Dr. Larson's approach makes complete sense: Alcohol undermines physical health and mental stability by destroying the vital nutrients responsible for the maintenance and proper functioning of the body and brain. To restore the natural chemistry that govern brain and body, and thus conquer alcoholism, Dr. Larson's plan is based on physical repair, the so-called bio-recovery. Her seven weeks programme is intimidating at first, but it all makes sense. Don't let the number of vitamin and nutrient pills discourage you. Her website healthrecovery.com has plenty of useful information as well as the complete 7 weeks nutrient system available for mail order. My brother has been doing fine, has not had cravings or anything, and in his words "genuinely happy for the longest number of years". There is this Chinese herb called Kudzu (alcohol-free tincture from revital.com), that also helps with your cravings. I also found the link between Omega-3 and 6 oils and moodswings and depression highly interesting. Changing your diet (cut out sugar etc. - after completion of programme you can sensibly use fruit sugar instead - it has a low GI that won't interfere with your insulin. Get a copy of Jason Vale's The Juice Master's Slim 4 Life or Michel Montignac's Eat Yourself Slim) is self-explanatory, I think. I am planning to get a copy of this book to the local AA and Alanon "club".

Why isn't this programme more widely available?? Quitting alcohol is not enough, the delicate balance in your body and brain must be restored to stop your cravings and help you get on with your life. Talking will not put vital nutrients back into your body, the 7 weeks programme will. Get this book and get with the programme. It will change your life. And the lives of those who love you.

Summary: IT'S NOT THAT HARD!
Comment: I could have saved myself 6 months more misery if I had carried out the instructions in this book after the first time I read it. After reaching a point where suicide seemed the only possible option, I would have tried anything.

When I began to look at the book properly I was amazed how easy it was to follow the plan inside. I had had brief periods of sobriety over the preceeding years, but during these times I was tortured with the desire to drink again and extreme fluctuations in my mood. These ranged from feeling elated, to being absolutely miserable.

I have now been sober over a year and have not wanted a drink in that time. Also, my emotions levelled out very quickly so that I would say that this last year has been the happiest of my life, without a doubt.

Following the program in this book may look difficult initally, but it's not that hard, I promise you. If you want to get sober and are prepared to spend even 10% of the effort you put into getting alocohol, you will find an answer in Seven Weeks.

Good Luck.

Summary: A waste of money
Comment: I agree with the basic premise of the book that there is a genetic physical cause to alcoholism (rather than just a lack of willpower) and that therefore some folks are more susceptible than others. And the small bit about identifying various alcoholic types was interesting. However, the recommendations for cure (the bulk of the book) are preposterous. If the recommendation "You're going to be taking a lot of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, up to sixty a day...." doesn't put you off. Then perhaps the advice to cut out sugar, caffeine, dairy and wheat products totally from your diet, might do the trick !! It's just not workable. I would have been more impressed had the author suggested a dietary plan to ensure the correct intake of all the apparently necessary minerals etc. through your normal daily diet.
