Customer Rating: Summary: A Heartbreaking ending Comment: I agree with the majority of the reviews - it's compelling, tragic, insightful, and horrifying. Yet perhaps the thing that infuriated me the most and was most telling about the entire situation was the way the story ends. My heart lept with joy when the boys were found guilty (i had been fearing they would get off throughout the book), thinking finally someone opened their eyes and held them morally responsible. But when the judge turned around and sentenced them to what turns out to be a relative slap on the wrist, my heart sank to its greatest depths. The question of whether or not they should be punished for "one hour of their lives" seems to have been answered by the judge "no, they shouldn't be - they are good guys." It broadens the scope of the book to show that it isn't just high school or Glen Ridge but the very foundation of our society that makes allowences for those who are deemed 'attractive' to the society (and white, of course) and punishes those that are not (I consider the judge's humiliating sentence a punishment to Leslie for her inability to be a 'normal' memeber of society). Those pricks got off easy - as they always have and always will. And we wonder why there is so much vigilante-ism in our high schools? This book is a good place to start to understand exactly why someone would feel powerless against their opressors - it seems even the justice system is going to side with the jock.
Customer Rating: Summary: Compelling and Horrific All MUST read this book! Comment: I was introduced to this book by a freind that lives near the town where the case was heard regarding Leslie. Once starting this book I could not stop reading. All at once I was shocked and horrified, but oddly not at all surprised by the actions in Glen Ridge.
It is time for us to take seriously the emotional needs of young men and stop discounting violent or aggressive actions as "boys will be boys".
I was unable to get through the book without expressing many emotions, both to myself and my significant other. There were for me, feelings of anger, frustration, sadness... but never joy. Overall I feel the outcome left me empty. There was and never will be closure for the family of Leslie and for Leslie herself.
Recently I made a trip to drive through Glen Ridge myself. A beautiful town indeed. It was erie to be there... It's hard to imagine something like this occurring in a town such as this. But it did happen, and it still does in many places least and most expected.
Mr. Lefkowitz has performed a great public service in demostrating how we raise our male children and the potentially devastating outcome of relying on old views of males. There is more to life than athletics, winning or competition.
Customer Rating: Summary: Leftkowitz Exposes The Myths And Disturbing Values of Suburb Comment: I read Our Guys quite a while ago, but it still has left a strong impression on me. Leftkowitz has shed light on a subject that had virtually been ignored by the mainstream media: the negative undertone of suburban values. While the main theme of the novel is the rape of an innocent young woman, the aspect of the book that struck me most was Leftkowitz's indictment of a culture that allowed this barbaric act to occur. I grew up in a suburan environment, similar to Glen Ridge, and while the elite of the school I went to were not coddled as much as the Glen Ridge Jocks, I could certainly identify with the skewed values the New Jersey suburb upheld. Obviously too much of a priority was placed on competitiveness, wealth, physical appearance and athletic prowess. Because the young "men" (and I use the term "men" loosely) who did this were considered to be the standard-bearers for these values, they were given barely a slap on the wrist each time they displayed boorish behavior. They felt that they were invincible and could get away with anything. Glen Ridge cared more about "their guys" than Leslie Faber, because Leslie did not represent their values of superiority and prestige. She was an underdog and Glen Ridge had no time for people who were considered "defective." Read this novel, however, and you will realize the "defective" ones were the young men who commited this heinous crime.
Customer Rating: Summary: Compelling and daunting case of the Jock culture Vs. Mental Comment: Excellent job by the author Bernard Lefkowitz for recapturing the essence of the Glen Ridge sexual assault case. It was a compelling case which centered towards the jock culture vs mental handicap. The town of GlenRidge was very caught up with upholding their perfect image and not realizing a serious sexual offense occurred. These boys was the jewels of the high school but in reality they are like an outcast on humanity itself. Justice hasn't been served!!
Customer Rating: Summary: This book portrays what is wrong with America Comment: I recently read this book as an outside reading assignment for school, and I was very disturbed. Going to a yuppie high school myself, I know that the jocks think they are god and get to push us around, and even where I live this is tolerated. It is unfortunate that our society is so preoccupied with sports that we give special consideration to anything that has to do w/ sports. For example, I don't understand how the city of Seattle is unable to pass school levys but can afford to build some big sports stadium. I know that is a bit off the subject but it supports my point. Just because someone plays sports SHOULD NOT give them the right to free food (as one reviewer mentioned), astronomical salaries (pro sports), higher grades (some teachers at my old school change athletes' grades who are on academic probation), or most importantly the right to harass and obuse others without penalties. As a society, we need to re-focus our priorities in order to recognize the people who really deserve it, and sure as hell aren't the athletes.
