Summary: Mildly entertaining
Comment: Quite entertaining and easy to read. More of a short-term diversion than a practically useful manual about shaving though. You might be better off putting your money towards some decent razor blades.

Summary: Slightly entertaining but lacking good information
Comment: I'm sure the author would be an entertaining sort of guy to share a pint with as he has some interesting tales to tell. I'm also sure I wouldn't want to spend more time with him than that as he comes across a bit boastful and his tales have more than a bit of... exaggeration.

The problem with the book is after reading about his exploits with one-eyed Cossacks in the jungle, freediving off of oil rigs and wandering the cities of Europe you aren't given much in the way of actual shaving tips or information. There is a lot of history of shaving in the book, and if you're interested in that, you might enjoy it. However even that has flaws; in spite of his research the author doesn't seem aware that Sweeney Todd is a fictional character.

In short, buy this book to read some drinking stories and trivia regarding shaving. If you're looking for a guide or useful information, look elsewhere. I recommend "Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving: Shaving Made Enjoyable" available here on Amazon for shaving tips and information.

Summary: In-depth review on what to expect from Sharp Practice
Comment: I considered myself to be a keen shaver before buying this book as I use a safety razor, brush and all the old traditional products. I was skeptical about how much I could learn from Sharp Practice, but was pleasantly surprised on what knowledge I did gain overall. Some little tips here and there can make all the difference when shaving, and I was very glad I purchased this book even for those prospects alone.

Most people buying this book will be looking for advice on the different aspects of shaving, which include preparation, common mistakes and post-shave, which you will get, no worries on that score. But you will also learn about the history of shaving throughout the world and how it all started, evolved and ended up as it is today.

The stories are actually very entertaining and interesting. Other stories include that of author Anders Larsen who talks about his childhood, youth and adult experiences with regards to shaving, most of which have an element of humour and caused me to raise a smile and a giggle from time-to-time. The stories are nice and personal, and I'm glad they were included in the book along with shaving advice, which is what most people, including myself, bought the book for as a priority.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their shave and learn about the history of shaving. It's a great read and is translated well into English.

Topics include: Cut-throat razor, safety razor, electric razor, preparation, stropping and honing, head shaving, common shaving problems and moustaches and beards.

Summary: Sharp Practice - a barber's view
Comment: It was OK but may cause quite a bit of disappointment. I don't think modern man has the tenacity, time or plain guts to undertake a year or two's apprenticeship in wet cut-throat shaving. It may make the male grooming wholesalers a fair chunk of cash over the forthcoming months, though! Mr Larsen also lectures from his own point of view without taking into account different physiologies, skin types, etc and many self taught "apprentices" may end up wasting a lot of money on appuratus, not to mention possibly feeling a failure when it doesn't go right in a week or two. Also, 'very dubious of Mr Larsen's tales of his daring do. Alright, it is obviously a fun-type Christmas book but few real men will believe that he dived 40 metres beneath the North Sea but forgot to take off his trousers!

Summary: The perfect gift for any man who shaves
Comment: I was given this for Christmas this year, and have to say that if I was told I could only keep one present from this Christmas - this book would be it.

Very well written, detailed and entertaining, it tells you everything you need to know to start transforming your daily shave from a chore to a pleasure - and if that doesn't sound like a good reason to get this book, I don't know what would be.
