Customer Rating: Summary: True story of first murder solved by DNA tests Comment: This story is set in three neighbouring villages with which I am familiar. The crimes were committed in the eighties, but I only came to know the villages many years later, when I worked in Narborough (the middle of the three villages) from 1998 to 2002. I heard occasional references to these crimes, although never any in-depth conversations. Even now, the topic is too sensitive, so the only way I could find out what really happened was via this book.
Wambaugh gives an excellent account of the crimes and the often futile attempts to solve them. Perhaps occasionally it is more graphic than it needs to be, describing the state of the bodies in intimate detail, but its easy to gloss over that (it is in print, not on film) and there's not too much of that. Some of the main characters, including the policemen and their suspects, are described in great detail. While some may feel that this is just padding, I feel it all helps to make it a good story.
Again, plenty of pages are devoted to false leads, but this may help us to understand why detective work is never as simple as we would like it to be. At one point, after the second murder, the police think they've got their man. The parents can't believe that he would do such a thing and it is at that point that the new science of DNA testing is brought in. The parents are convinced their son in innocent. The police are convinced that he is not only guilty of that murder, but also the earlier one. Did the same man commit both murders and was this particular man guilty? The DNA test results eventually provide answers, but to find out what those answers were, you must read the book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Many Of The Facts Are NOT FACTS Comment: I happen to be the nephew of one of the Victims in this book and what I want to say is that many of the so called facts are nothing of the kind. I've read the book and yes its a good read but if you want to know the truth behind these murders my suggestion would be to do some more research on the internet.
Customer Rating: Summary: An awsome true crime story Comment: I haven't read too many true crime books, the genre does not appeal as much as the fictional kind where nomatter what happens you can always retreat behind the fact that it is fictional if it gets a bit unpleasant. This however had always appeald because I come from Leicestershire and the book tells of events which happened in the Leicestershire village of Narborough and of a breakthrough in the case which took place in my local pub, The Clarendon. The story revolves around how the murders of two young girls were solved thanks to techniqies in genetic fingerprinting developed at Leicester University, the first time genetic profiling had been used and at the time of the crimes and the subsequent murder hunt it was big news. These factors were what initially drew me to the book. It is, however, so much more than just a book about where I lived and an event about which I knew sonething of. It is fabulously written and provides a great insight into the workings of a police department as they at times hopelessly try to crack a baffling crime. Were it not for 2 contrasting reasons:- the breakthrough in the science labs at the University, and the inability of a young lad to keep his mouth closed over a pint in a pub, the killer would almost certainly have got away with it. Compelling stuff, a brilliant read and extremely well written.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent read Comment: This is for sure one of the best books that I have ever read. I was a child growing up in the village of Narborough at the time that these murders took place. The accuracy of his accounts and the way in which the book was written made this a book that I just couldn't put down. I will certainly read more books from this writer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wambaugh falls short Comment: As a committed fan of Joseph Wambaugh, in terms of both his subject material and his style of writing, I was very disappointed with this effort. For years, the author has been in danger of immersing his tales a little too much in the worlds of darkness and despair that affect police officers far less than his novels would have you believe - so we should have seen it coming. For that reason, I was looking forward to the transfer of Wambaugh's style of storytelling to an English setting and a fressh perspective. Unfortunatley, I found that he got stranded in the Libraries and Case studies of the case. Whereas The Onion Field was a true story provided to the reader in the form of a pacy, atmospheric novel, The Blooding was little more than a bland recitation of facts gleaned no doubt from Wambaugh's usual meticulous research and personal interviews. Let me correct that. This is NO more than a bland recitation....etc This book was written some time ago now, and I have only just got round to reading it. I hope we haven't seen the last of JW taking on case from this side of the pond. I just hope he stays at home to write them, and inject the same style his usual work shows.
