Summary: You have to read this!
Comment: This book is amazing. It doesn't go into graphic details about the attack or anything. Its far more about Trisha's recovery and how her life changed afterwards. She is such an amazing woman and if you read this book, you can't fail to learn something from it. If she can get through something so awful, it makes you think you could deal with just about anything. She is truly inspirational.
If you have read A New Earth, this book gives the same message about living in the now. I couldn't put it down once I started reading.
If life is hard at the moment and you need some inspiration, this is the book to read.

Summary: A life interrupted - but not destroyed
Comment: I decided to read this because a relative had been in a coma, and been reconstructed, physically and mentally, afterwards. I wanted the insights it would give me, but I was expecting it to be hard going. I didn't find it so, though.

If you know the original story, you'll know to some extent why her case in particular made (at the time) hardened New Yorker's weep. She does lay out the facts as they happened - I wouldn't give this to any child, as inspirational as it is.

But the overwhelming impression is that she's so sane and straightforward. Not perfect - reassuringly unsaintly, in fact. Really brave where it's necessary - yet willing to sidestep what she needs to sidestep at any given moment just because that's how it is for her right then.

Really strong, really inspiring. If you're sweating the small stuff to any extent at all, this will probably help you recognise it, and find your own achievement-level rather than beat yourself up with over-ambition or perfectionism. You can excel, you can overcome - perfection not necessary.

Read it.

I Am the Central Park Jogger tells the real-life story of a young woman who was brutally assaulted and raped while jogging in New York's Central Park in April of 1989,. The attack captured headlines around the world as the anonymous "Central Park Jogger" fought to recover from massive injuries that left her near death. Fourteen years later, in this first-person account, Trisha Meifi breaks her silence to discuss the incident in her own words and reveal who she was before the attack and who she has become as a result of it. Meifi tells the story of a competitive and driven young executive at a finance firm whose life was destroyed, and how she ultimately rebuilt it. Passages in which Meifi is reunited years later with the doctors and nurses who saved her life are especially compelling, as are her accounts of testifying in court and her first run after the incident. While her candour is remarkable and certainly moving, it's worth noting what this book does not include. Meifi can provide no detail of the actual attacks (she has no memory of them), she has little to say about the racial controversy her case ignited and she only briefly mentions the fact that, during the writing of this book, the convictions of her attackers were vacated after another man confessed to the crime. But these are not necessarily omissions; they are simply not central to Trisha Meifi's highly readable story of tragedy and, ultimately, triumph. I Am the Central Park Jogger is not just a book for New Yorkers curious to finally hear from "The Jogger"; it's an inspirational tale of overcoming enormous obstacles and getting back on the road again. --John Moe, Amazon.com
