Summary: This book is a revelation!
Comment: This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand addiction. It's focus is on food but it also helps with understanding addiction generally. When I read CHapter 3, it took my breath away. I finally found an explanation for my Mother's inability to express love or affection but I also began to feel more compassion for her and her obsession with food. This has opened up the possibility for us to heal our relationship in a way that was not possible before. This book has truly changed my life. It describes the passage of addiction the root of which begins when a child's needs are repeatedly not met. These needs are many ranging from physical needs, such as warmth, nourishing meals, sleep, and safety to emotional needs such as affection, attention, honesty, bonding and validation. It seems obvious really. If a child is deprived of these then they feel pain but don't know how to express it. Food (and especially sugar) becomes a way of numbing the pain. Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, sex, shopping are other ways. However, an addict can learn to avoid these totally. No-one can avoid food. We need to eat which makes food addiction so difficult to overcome.
This book offers real, constructive guidance on becoming free from obsessive thoughts about food. It is easy to read, full of wisdom and understanding. Ann Katherine is herself a recovered food addict and a trained psychotherapist. She is an Eeting Disorders Therapist but sadly is based in Seattle. However, I feel inspired after reading this and will now look for similar treatment processes in the UK. Maybe I will set up a recovery group in my area. Now that is a great idea!
