Customer Rating: Summary: Best resource for parents teaching a baby under 2 (preferably under 1) to swim! Comment: I've only just started taking private swimming lessons 3 weeks ago, because I think my fear of water could have an influence on my 3 childrens' ability to learn swimming. But in fact, I had taken about 16 hours of swimming lessons when I was 8 years old, about 22 years ago, in a large class with a swimming school. I never learnt to swim without the aid of a kickboard. Well, at least I *thought* I couldn't swim without it. But now after just 3 short 30 minute private lessons, I realised I actually could swim all along, by myself - just not the way I was taught 22 years ago. You see, I was taught the rigorous "proper" way to breaststroke and freestyle (the way Olympic swimmers swim) right from the first lesson back then. I was made to feel quite useless because I couldn't do it quite right and the teacher could not give enough attention to me because of all the other students, so I didn't know what I was doing wrong. My lessons back then weren't enjoyable, they were stressful, because there was constant pressure to learn to swim as quickly as the others in class, and to swim "properly". I quitted.
In the private lessons I took recently however, I was gently encouraged to follow my instincts in the water and, with good one-to-one coaching any counter-productive moves that I made whilst swimming were corrected promptly, and within 3 lessons I'm now swimming without the use of any aids, both freestyle and breaststroke.
This has taught me the importance of having the right teacher, who teaches with the right approach. When you teach your own children to swim, you know you're the best teacher out there that you can possibly give your kids. You need to be very patient and receptive to each child's personal style and inclinations, and be gentle and understanding towards them regardless of whether they seem to be making progress or not. All this, plus you need to arm yourself with all the information you need about the physiology, psychology, exercises, steps, to teach your baby to swim. Even if you already know how to swim, you may not realise what underwater reflexes a baby is born with and how to work with them, etc.
I think this book is especially important for those who have learnt swimming as a toddler or baby, because such people learnt swimming at such a young age, they probably have forgotten the experience of learning it and as such, may not really know the best way to start their own babies off in water on the first steps towards acquiring swimming skills. I say this because my husband is one example - he learnt when he was about 2 or 3 years old - and yet when he takes one of our kids into the pool, he often ends up getting them frightened of the water, and then he doesn't know what to do with them to make them more confident in water. It'd be a challenge getting him to read all of the text in this book since he's not a book lover by nature, but I will be making him read at least the important parts so he knows what to do and how to handle the situation when he takes our children into water next time!
Also, because I learnt swimming in childhood and as an adult - at ages old enough to comprehend the entire process of learning, trial and error and all! - I've come to the conclusion that all flotation devices are quite unnecessary when learning to swim. I never used a single flotation device throughout my hours devoted to acquiring the ability to swim. I was scared of water for a long time! But I never used a flotation device and never needed one when learning how to swim. In fact, the only device I've used were kickboards, which are not flotation devices but are swim-training aids to improve kicks.... and even then, I'd grown so dependent on them as a child whenever I was in water, that I became very fearful of swimming if I didn't use one, which was why I thought I "couldn't swim" all these years! I just froze whenever I didn't hold on to a kickboard in water, so I'd sink, and somehow convinced myself I couldn't swim without it!
This book is great because it teaches swimming without the use of any flotation device or swim-training aid. I've also owned this author's book for pregnancy yoga and yoga for babies, and practised them myself and on my children. They are very effective! I really liked Francoise Barbira Freedman's approach and philosophy to yoga, and now I can say I also like her approach and philosophy to teaching swimming in babies. You do not need to be a great swimmer to teach your baby to swim if you follow this book, but you cannot be afraid of water yourself. Another thing I have to mention is that this book really is geared towards teaching a baby from age 0 months to 2 years to learn to swim. If you're trying to teach an older baby or child to swim, you may have to read some other books for additional tips on teaching swimming, because older children may have acquired a fear of water which is less common in young babies, and they may need more than just this book's activities to overcome their fear of water in the first place!
Customer Rating: Summary: WOW! Comment: This is a superb book. The photographs are so inspiring, just beautiful.
The advice is first class and very good if you need the confirence to introduce your baby to swimming, even from birth and includes how to submerge your baby safely.
Highly recommended.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great book, beautiful pictures Comment: I'm a swimming teacher and this book has even taught me a thing or two. There are different schools of thought on baby-swimming, especially with new borns, and the under water reflex etc, but this books handles the whole issue sensitively and authoratitively. The pictures are great and should give parents lots of ideas of things to try, but also the confidence to actually do them. Teaching your young child to swim is so incredibly important, and I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to all parents.
Customer Rating: Summary: Confidence with baby swimming Comment: I bought this book because I belief in not using floatation devices 100% of the time (it interferes with learning about buoyancy) to teach a child to swim, but I felt I was a bit stuck with my 16 month old and wanted some ideas on how to progress. This book exceeded my expectations. It has given me more ideas on how to hold my daughter in the water, including ways in which I can swim with her. I enjoyed the chapters on how to take her underwater; there is a good explanation of the dive reflex in newborns. It is presented in an easy to read format, with excellent photographs to demonstrate the techniques being used. The fun part of swimming for both of you is emphasised. If you are starting with a newborn there are excellent explanations of how to start your baby off in the water (starting with the bath), how to select a suitable pool and what sort of equipment you might like. Also there is an explanation about the newborn swimming reflexes. This book really does give you confidence with your baby in the water without having to rug them up in arm bands and rubber rings, and does what it says it will - "Teach your baby the joys of water - from newborn floating to toddler swimming."
