Customer Rating: Summary: Some interesting analysis.....but take with a pinch of salt Comment: In 'The Edge Effect' the author, Eric Braverman, analyses the functioning of the human brain and, in particular, how chemicals produced in the brain drastically affect both mental performance and our predisposition to certain illnesses.
Braverman theorises that humans produce four key 'neuro-chemicals' which regulate the functioning of the brain: serotonin, dopamine, gaba, and acetylcholine. He examines each of these in turn in some detail and postulates that an imbalace can trigger certain illnesses, including depression, obesity, sexual dysfunction and Alzheimer's.
Braverman then examines possible remedies to rectify neuro-chemical imbalance. This includes lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise and use of vitamins / supplements, hormone treatment and prescription medication.
All this sounds quite plausible, but does the basic theory espoused in 'The Edge Effect' actually carry any weight?.....
Well, the underlying principles of Braverman's theory, i.e. the importance of neurotransmitters in regulating brain function and general well-being are actually more or less based in mainstream medical theory. Braverman's interesting and insightful analysis of brain chemistry actually constitutes this book's strongest suit. This section is very well constructed and provides much interesting food for thought, not least in its analysis of personality and behaviour.
Where 'The Edge Effect' is weaker is in its rather cobbled-together approach towards remedial treatment for imbalance in brain chemistry. Although I quite like Braverman's open-minded approach to potential remedies, embracing both holistic and mainstream medical theory, many of his suggestions are a tad unresearched, are still little more than 'cod-science' and as such should be treated with a measure of caution.
As a result, in the writer's opinion, some of the book's great claims come across as somewhat exaggerated and the self-aggrandising nature of Braverman's writing style rather exacerbates this feeling.
Overall, however, 'The Edge Effect' contains enough interesting analysis to make it a worthwhile read. Moreover, somewhere in the welter of information on remedial 'lotions and potions' contained within its pages there may be something of use for someone looking to treat a particular ailment on a 'try-it-and-see' basis.
Good luck...
