Customer Rating: Summary: Not Sure Comment: Read this book at the weekend, was very excited by all the reviews, but it hasn't done anything for me. I get the nicotine trick, but i dont get the visualisation bit. Im going to go back over it and keep trying. Very disappointed it hasn't happened straight away.
Customer Rating: Summary: a trick and a treat Comment: It's been about 2 years since i read this book and for someone with zero will power (especially when i've had a few drinks) it is quite amazing what a few simply written pages can do.
I have not smoked for 2 years. I have not put on weight. I have not spent evenings out with friends sweating and craving after a drag. I have seen the truth behind that pathetic little stick of tobacco. Neil Casey is a genius. Buy this book because it will change your life. (But make sure you read it from cover to cover...don't just read a couple of pages!)
Customer Rating: Summary: the trick is you buying the book Comment: All I can say that this book is a waste of money. Casey tries to make you believe he has read all the literature and "science" but he obviously has not. Hes book is a total lie. Let me explain. Firstly i am a pharmacologist, so i know what science is. He doesn't understand what hes talking about and he lies. For example. he says nicotine is not addictive and claims that it is impossible to get a lab rodent hooked on nicotine. He knows nothing and he makes you bilieve hes read all the papers out there. The book takes a few hours too read and the whole point is that he claims smoking induces a fear response in which our body percieves as "real". He claims, when we smoke, this fear gets reset and tricks our mind into thinking that the nicotine calmed you down. Honneslty this is what the book says, just repeating it in different ways. He claims smoking is not an addiction but an "affair". Neil Casey is a cheat, he took my hard earned cash and thats all. If he would not have lied id have been ok. But hes book is a waste of time. At least Alan car uses behavioral cognitive therapy "somewhat justified..."
Now heres what he should have said and ill save you wasting ur money on the book. What does cocaine, heroin and nicotine have in common? They all act on different neurotransmitter systems - cocaine - on the dopaminergic and noradrenaline systems, heroin on the opiate system- nicotine on the cholinergic system- and they all produce different physcomotor effects. But... all three drugs are highly addictive. This is explained by the fact that they all act on the brain circuitry that motivates behavior- ie "drug seeking behavior". In the case of heroin and nicotine, the main site is the ventral tegmental area, which contain dopamine neurones that project axons from the lateral hypothalamus to the forebrain. These domamine neurons have both opiate and nicotinic receptors. So in basic terms, nicotine , like heroin stimulates dopamine release in a specific part of the brain. The precise role in which dopamine plays in motivating behavioral continues to be debated. This is true science, millions of papers are out, which are highly scrutinized and peer reviewd in the science world. So when you smoke its the dopamine that "tricks" ur mind into thinking that ur getting a reward, but its no trick, you are! Why else would you smoke? Finally when you smoke a lot, the receptors get down sensitized and you need more so you finally just get angry and want to stop because nothing is really happening. Dont waste your money on Neil Caseys physcobabble, just put down that smoke, endure a few days of withdraw and simple, non smoker for life. Science is the truth, Neil Casey is the author who uses physiology to trick you into buying his book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Hmmmmm, unfortunately still not convinced Comment: I've just finished reading this book, after having got quite excited by it given the reviews on here.
Having read Allan Carr's EasyWay before (several times) and not been 'cured', I was willing to give this book a go. Whilst I found Neil Casey's writing style easy to read and his ideas on smoking and 'The Nicotine Trick' interesting, I felt really let down by the ending and his 'cure' to the nicotine addiction.
Mr Casey asks the reader to visualise cigarettes as a snake and the nicotine as being the snake's venom, comparing the act of smoking to being bitten by this snake. Unfortunately I'm one of these people who's visualising kills aren't very good and felt slightly foolish trying to imagine this snake. Whilst Mr Casey doesn't tell you to STOP SMOKING as soon as finishing the book, I found I woke up this morning and the urge to have a cigarette was stronger than ever. Now I'm not saying his technique won't work on me, and if indeed it does still as he says that it will, I'll eat humble pie, but I'm not convinced that it will at all.
Basically all quit smoking books rely on a form on written self-hypnosis & suggestion based on repetion of the key points & argument, and having realised this I think that these type of books won't work for me.
However, in Mr Casey's favour I do like the fact that he doesn't try to ram down your throat a reliance on his book and technique (as a certain other quit smoking 'guru' does).
As soon as immediate funds allow, I'm will to give hyponotherapy a try at quitting.
As for other people, this book may well be the key to quitting which you need, so like me, at least give it a try!
Customer Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Comment: I have been a heavy smoker for 15 years and in the past 2 years I have tried almost everything to stop. You name it, I have tried it. The longest time I was able to stop for was 3 months and that was by reading reading Allan Carr's book but the thought of smoking was still at the back of my mind for those 3 months.
I have no willpower what so ever. My smoking caused depression in the end as I couldn't stop. Sometimes I would cry and cry, which of course made me want another cigarette.
I have spent hundreds and hundreds of pounds on different methods inc hypnotherapy but nothing worked until I read this book.
It took me a couple of days to read it, it was such a great book that I couldn't put it down.
I didn't do the 'hypnotherapy' bit at the end of the book as I didn't need to - Neil Casey had already convinced me to stop before I got to that bit. I think what helped more was that I had read Allan Carr's book so both combined really worked for me as I had the positive 'Carr' attitude with the 'Casey' REAL FACTS on smoking.
It was well written and very 'down to earth' and easy to read,
Its been 3 months now since I had my last cigarette but from the first week of stopping I knew I would NEVER SMOKE AGAIN! Everyone I know is still shocked and is expecting to smoke but I know I won't. I actually now feel I am in a better position than those who have never smoked as I know I will never smoke again where as they might still be tempted to try one.
I have loads more money, I don't smell, I don't have to take my inhaler anymore and the best of all is........ I'm not 'pushing' my children away from me any more because I'm 'having a fag!' :)
Thank you so much Neil Casey.
Emma x
P.S. My brother picked up the book and started reading it because he was bored (two months ago) and hasnt smoked since either :)
