Summary: An awe inspiring book
Comment: This book is mind-blowing! Nancy Venables Raine writes about her rape and the affect that it had, and continues to have on her life. She writes with feeling and with conviction. She helps you to understand what someone who has been raped goes through. She is clear when she is writing about the worst thing that could happen to someone.
The book has statistics in that will frighten and astound you. But not too many that you will be put off reading more. It will make you realise that this henious crime is committed far more often than is realised. It will make you realise that the aftermath continues for a long, long time. Whilst she has learned to live with what happened to her, she does not make anyone who has experienced the same who is reading the book feel that they are wrong in feeling whatever they are feeling. It is an encouragement and almost a comfort.
I bought this book to "help" me after I was raped. She made me feel that whilst my experiences were different to hers, some of the reactions are similar and just as devastating. I lent this book to friends to assist them in understanding what had happened to me and how I felt. It also blew their minds away.
I would ask that anyone who reads this book thinks about the crime and to ensure that you are NEVER the "woman with the Amber necklace".

Summary: Brilliantly insightful!
Comment: This is a book for everyone to read, not just victims of rape and their friends/relatives.

Nancy Raine gives a very detailed account of the emotional/mental/physical aftermath of rape. She dispels many myths that exist, that help to shroud the topic of rape in silence, and looks critically at the cultural context of rape and how it is perceived by the general public.

The language is superbly handled, and the reader is totally transported into the author's life story, and how she came to tell it.

Nancy Raine firmly places the crime of rape under the heading of 'violence' not 'sexual' and explains many of the misunderstandings around the way language is used, which enhances the victim's distress instead of helping her to come to terms with it.

It's an eye-opening, very accessible text that everyone should read, in order to learn more about themselves, society and victims of rape.

Summary: Intelligent insightful review of the REAL harms inflicted
Comment: For anyone who has been the victim of a sexual assault or anyone who knows someone who has been a victim.
Also very good for women who do not want to become a victim. Not that it offers a failsafe way of avoiding problems, but it brings the reality of unpredicatiblty and today's dangers into light. It makes you realise how many times we are off guard, or leave ourselves vulnerable.
I have read Paul Britton, and I like his books for the same reason. They show the true nature of violent crime and the places where it can occur.
I would not have thought of the situation that the author finds herself in as being a dangerous one, untill I read her book.
Her attacker gained access to her house by the back door as she had just gone out to put rubbish out . Her back door was only open for a moment. He had probably been monitoring her property for a while.
I think all women should be aware of these types of crime, not to encite fearmongering, but just to be realistic about the types of sexual crimes that are happening nowadays.
In fact I would go as far as to say that especially women who have not been assaulted should read this book, because they are the people most likely to have a false sense of security, and are therefore the people most in need of education of dangers.
This kind of assualt may not be the most common, but it still offers a very educated view into the real problem underlying the results of a physical assault. The damage to the mind, the trust, the sense of security, and so on. She details the grieving process for the pre rape person. It brilliantly charts the mental and emotional landscape.
Even if you have no interest in assault, you will find this book beautifully written and a very compelling read.
She spent a great deal of money on therapy, and explains some fantastic 'illuminations' about what she has learned about her experience later in the book. So you are getting expert insight into the problem second hand so to speak.

I could say almost exactly the same review about the book : Telling by Patricia Weaver Francisco. Another excellent book.

Excellent.
I wish all women were aware of what risks they face in terms of sexual assault, both in terms of the assault itself and the effect it may have on them later.

Summary: Truly an uplifting and positive book
Comment: Truly an uplifting and positive book, a fantastic achievement by Nancy Venable Raine. The way that she talks about how she overcame the trauma of rape, truly enables people who have also suffered this form of assault to get their lives back. Her insights into the emotional fall-out of rape victims rings very true, in a sensitive way. But, not only does she discuss the way rape victims react to their experience, she also deals with how others may react to someone they know being raped, (the chapter The Woman in the Amber Necklace demonstrates this in quite a stark way, resulting in making the reader consider how they would react in a similar situation). Therefore this book is not only for victims of rape, but also those who may be a relative of a rape victim, or for someone who wishes to learn how to be more understanding of rape victims. I highly reccomend this book. It addresses many issues and makes you consider your own prejudices.

Summary: a thoughtful and hopeful account of life after rape
Comment: This book is a very moving, thoughtful, and almost understated book about the trauma of a rape and the way in which it alters the identity of the woman who experiences it. It is a highly personal account, in which the strength and vulnerability of the author are equally in evidence, and her determination to claw back her sense of herself in the decade following the rape is remarkable. The book is hopeful, and ultimately very moving, without being a schmaltzy, happy-ending tale divorced from the tradegy of its all-too-real subject. I couldn't put this book down, and it was one of the few books I've read recently that inspired me, and it reminded me of the frailty of the self and yet the depth of a woman's resources to cope with the trauma of a horrendous crime. Read it even if you have not been unlucky enough to have any personal experience of rape and its aftermath.
