Customer Rating: Summary: It has certainly helped me Comment: I was no stranger to Glenn Harrold's hypnotherapy CDs when I bought this, having previously used his "Build Your Self Esteem" CD to good effect. Having been battling a serious addiction problem for all of my adult life (the details and nature of which I won't go into here), I was pleasantly surprised to see that an Addiction CD also existed. I was particularly pleased to see that it is not aimed at a specific addiction, as there are plenty of CDs available for some of the more common and less taboo addictions such as smoking and eating, but there isn't much out there for less talked about addictions, for instance gambling, which can also wreck lives.
So does it work? Well, my experience is that it certainly can work, because it has helped me. This doesn't mean that it will be of help to everyone however. Here are some tips to overcome some obstacles that might exist which I have found useful:
- I read somewhere that people are more likely to be susceptible to hypnotherapy and hypnotism if they 'want' it to work and believe it can work. Well, I'm not sure why someone would use this CD if they didn't want or believe in it, but nevertheless, it helps to approach it with the right frame of mind. One thing that certainly helps is if you demystify hypnotherapy in your own mind: when you actually understand what it is, it's easy to see why it would work. Reading a book on the subject is a good idea. One that I would recommend, and that is very easy to read, is "Monsters and Magical Sticks" by Stuart Heller and Terry Steele (ignore the title, it's a very informative book).
- Overcoming an addiction is a harder target than, say, motivating yourself to go to the gym, or one of the other subjects of Glenn Harrold's CDs. It's a big claim to make, and although I personally have found the CD useful, I am committed to recovery. Hence if you want this CD to help you, then I see no reason why it shouldn't, but I don't think that you could force this CD upon someone who is hell bent on self destruction and expect it to work. That would be an unrealistic claim, so I don't want to give that impression.
- Glenn Harrold's voice: I've read some negative reviews for some of Harrold's other CDs from people who simply don't like his voice. Well, a voice is a voice, and like singing, you'll never find a voice that isn't annoying to someone. I have no problem with Glenn's voice at all (although he seems to have trouble pronouncing the word "moment" for some reason!), but even if I did, I think I would be able to look past this if I was really intent on getting a benefit from this CD, so hopefully other people facing serious problems can do the same. Certainly the general production on the CD is excellent, something that is no doubt helped by the fact that Harrold is also a musician.
- Using the CD in the right setting is definitely very helpful. Personally, I have put the CD on my MP3 player, and use decent in-the-ear isolation headphones (which are pretty cheap these days). At bed time, I turn the lights out and climb under the sheets, and then press play. Often during the course of the CD, I fall asleep (or at least enter a deep trance), and then come back to consciousness when it ends. At this point I just remove my headphones, roll over, and go to sleep. A fantastic side effect of this is that never in my life have I had such peaceful sleep all night long as since I've been using this CD! In terms of falling into a trance whilst the CD plays, it's worth noting that this didn't happen the first few times I used it. It's almost as if it takes a bit of practice (like I said before, you have to 'want' it to work), plus familiarity also helps you to relax I think, as the first few times you'll be listening too intently. Incidentally, falling asleep during the CD is not a bad thing, as hearing hypnotic suggestions in this way works well.
I hope this review is helpful...to anyone facing the nightmare that is addiction, if you can follow the above advice (or find other ways that work for you), I would certainly recommend this CD. My life is better for it, and I will certainly continue to use it. Good luck if you choose to do the same.
